The masthead
A consulting room for the continent
Doctor Earth treats Australian country as a long-term patient: take a history, look at the ground, and be suspicious of miracle cures.
The name is older than this codebase. The public web archive had nothing usable left of doctorearth.com.au when this edition was rebuilt, so we inferred the brief from the plate on the door: a doctor of Earth, writing in Australia, for people who still have to live here in January.
We are not a clinic, a university faculty or a government desk. We are an independent editorial journal. The medicine is metaphorical; the facts are not. Essays in The Land, The Water, Fire Season, Wild Neighbours, The House and Civic Practice are written to be used — on a farm, in a weatherboard, at a Landcare meeting, or while reading a development application that hopes nobody will.
What we publish
Long-form work, generally more than a thousand words, in Australian English. We prefer a useful sentence to a viral one. We name catchments, soil types, statutes and species when they matter. We distinguish what is settled science from what is still being argued in a local hall.
Who we are
The desk is edited by Dr Anika Reddy, with correspondents across soils, water, fire, wildlife, public health and civic process. Guest writers are welcome under the write-for-us guidelines. Paid and guest links are labelled and carry rel="sponsored".
How to reach us
